I still haven’t explored the southwestern part of France. Pays Basques, Toulouse, Arcachon, Biarritz – so many interesting places in that area! Few weeks ago I finally had a chance to visit Bordeaux, the capital of one of the most famous wine regions in France.
Весь исторический центр Бордо включён в список наследия ЮНЕСКО – и совершенно заслуженно, потому что архитектура в центре не просто гармонична, а я бы сказала – безупречна. Светло-серый, практически белый камень, из которого построены здания, придаёт городу по-парижски элегантный вид, а вот улицы не по-парижски широки и просторны. Прогуливаться по центру – настоящее наслаждение для эстета!
The historic center of Bordeaux is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and I should say it’s well-deserved: the architecture of the 18th century is exceptional. The buildings are constructed of the clear grey and beige, almost white stone, which makes the streets look elegant and refined. Simmetry and harmony are in every detail. Walking around the city center was a pure pleasure and I’m still in that state of bliss from the beauty of the city!
На то, чтобы осмотреть город, вполне хватит пары дней, но вокруг Бордо расстилается один из самых знаменитых винных регионов Франции… Было очень обидно уезжать, не побывав ни в одном из винодельческих хозяйств, но уик-энда для этого точно недостаточно. Пришлось ограничиться небольшой дегустацией в центре Бордо, в винной галерее Max. Там можно заказать дегустацию “с гидом” – специалистом, который расскажет вам об особенностях того или иного сорта винограда, а также подберёт вина. Можно дегустировать и самостоятельно: приобрести карточку с определённым количеством баллов и цедить себе по чуть-чуть из бесконечных бутылок.
You need a couple of days to visit Bordeaux, but you should plan one extra day for a wine degustation in one the castles around the city. Bordeaux has given its name to the oldest and most prestigious vineyard region in France, and is famous the world over for its fine wines! Unfortunately I had no time to explore the region, but still could find a nice place for a wine tasting just in the center of city. Max wine gallery is an innovative wine cellar with a nice concept of degustation: you credit a tasting card that is given to you upon arrival to the gallery with your desired amount and you choose the wines by yourself. The establishement is really cool, with modern design and a big quantity of wines.
В Бордо очень красивая набережная (горд стоит на реке Гаронне), вдоль которой тянутся белоснежные здания кварталов Святого Петра и Святого Михаила. Этот архитектурный ансамбль считается эталоном раннего классицизма в архитектуре. Утром в погожий день набережная залита солнцем, и с неё открывается восхитительный вид на Гаронну, пересечённую мостами.
I’ve already written that I have a thing about river cities… Bordeaux is built on the banks of the Garonne River and has an incredibly beautiful quay! The waterfront is magnificent thanks to beautiful 18th century façades lining the river and the lawns, parks and gardens along the Garonne are the great places to take a walk.

I was lucky : in Bordeaux the autumn was still in full swing in November this year. The beauty of the city was completed by wonderful golden colors of leafage….
Аквитания (регион, в котором расположен Бордо) – одно из самых известных гастрономических направлений во Франции. Пожалуй, только Бургундия может с ней посоперничать… Дегустация вина, конечно, лучше всего проходит вместе со вкусным обедом или ужином:) Могу горячо рекомендовать ресторан Le Gabriel, который расположился в самом козырном месте города – прямо на площади Биржи (и название ресторана – в честь архитектора, который её спроектировал). Из окон ресторана открывается вид на Гаронну, а в меню предлагаются традиционные блюд Аквитании в новом прочтении. Лучшее место для знакомства с высокой французской кухней сложно придумать!
The Aquitaine region, where Bordeaux is situated, is famous by its gastronomy. Indeed, a good wine tasting is better with a good dinner;) Foie gras, truffles, mushrooms, prunes and nuts are the basis of the Aquitaine cooking – definitely not light, but heavenly delicious.
One of the best restaurants in the city is situated on the grandiose Place de la Bourse and named after the architect who designed plans for this square: Le Gabriel. It’s an elegant place which offers a fantastic view on the Garonne river. If you want to experience French haute cuise, Le Gabriel will be a perfect choice!
Хорошие кофе-места в Бордо тоже есть – мне очень понравилась кофейня Black List Café в центре города, прямо напротив собора Сан-Андре. Там делают каппучино со вкусной пеной, есть столики на улице и отличный морковный кекс. В общем, не очень французское место, но всё, как я люблю.
There are some nice coffee shops in Bordeaux (and don’t forget to get a canelé with your coffee;) For example, I liked a spot called Black List Café just in front of the Saint-André Cathedral. They make great cappuccino with a rich foam and you can enjoy it sitting on a table outside and admiring the cathedral. To sum up, it’s not quite a French style place, but it has everything I like.
Все города я оцениваю по принципу “смогла ли бы я в этом городе жить”. Про Бордо в этом смысле можно уверенно сказать, что да, смогла бы. Для меня важна красота вокруг, ощущение истории и традиций, атмосфера безопасности и хороший климат – в Бордо я всё это увидела и почувствовала. К тому же город так недалеко от моря… Конечно, по сравнению с Парижем ритм жизни очень спокойный, но в этом есть своя прелесть. Надеюсь ещё не раз вернуться в Бордо!
The main question that I ask myself when I visit a new city is if I would like to stay there. I always play a game about looking at the windows, doors and balconies and choosing a flat or a house in which I can imagine to live. Bordeaux is full of places like this! As for me, the most important things about a city are its beauty and history, soft climat and security. Evaluated with these criterias, Bordeaux seems to me a nice place to live. And the sea is not far away… Hope to be back soon!

Jolies photos, j’adore vraiment cette ville, une belle architecture avec des vieilles pierres, la vue sur le fleuve et la campagne pas loin avec ses vignobles. Beaucoup de gens disent que c’est agréable d’y vivre
