Говорят, город на месте Лечче существовал ещё во времена Троянской войны, только назывался он по-другому: Сибар. Я в это верю – в Лечче чувствуется древность. Время здесь едва слышно шуршит, словно песок под ногами, – даже удивительно, что изъеденные ветром стены до сих пор не рассыпались в прах. Римляне, византийцы, сарацины, норманны – кто только не побывал хозяином Лечче! Тех народов уже нет, а город стоит и жизнь в нём течёт по-итальянски шумно и беспокойно.
Фасад главного храма Лечче, Санта Кроче, украшает огромная резная розетка. Если присмотреться, в её узорах можно угадать мужские профили – так пошутили средневековые архитекторы, на века искусно вписавшие в каменное кружево свои автопортреты.
По узким улочкам Лечче гуляет эхо – в городе почти нет зелени, и каменные мостовые зажаты между каменными стенами. Думаю, даже в летнюю жару древние стены хранят прохладу. Ну, а мы на исходе сезона по вечерам кутались в шарфы и ёжились от ветра.
A legend says, a city called Sybar existed on the place of actual Lecce at the time of Trojan war, in the 13th or 12th century. Walking in the narrow medieval streets of Lecce, I felt it could be true. The walls of the amazing ornate Baroque buildings are darkened with time and you can imagine générations and generations of people who lived in the city. Lecce was conquered by the Romans, then by Saracens, Lombards, Normans… The states and civilizations disappeared, but the city stays at its place, noisy, charming and joyful.
The Santa Croce Church, an important historical and cultural monument of Lecce, has a beautiful rose window on its façade. If you look attentively on it from the outside, you can find the bas-reliefs of the men’s profiles. That’s the joke of the ancient architects, who immortalized their faces in the stone decoration of the Chiesa di Santa Croce…
In the narrow streets of Lecce you hear the echo of your steps. No trees in the city, and the cobblestone pavements are stifled between spectacular Baroque façades. In the center of Lecce you can see the Roman amphitheatre, built in the 2nd century, and many richely decorated churches. All buildings in the city are made of the unique “Lecce stone”, which is soft, but able to harden with time and very practical for crafting small architectural details.

В внутреннем дворе одно из зданий спряталась маленькая барахолка, и только жёсткие ограничения багажа удержали нас от приобретения восхитительных каминных часов (правда, у меня дома нет камина) и умопомрачительной старинной вазы!
In one hidden courtyard we found a small flea market with plenty of charming old knick-knackery. The only reason why we didn’t came back with some golden table clocks and antique vases was our luggage limitation!

Мне всегда уютно в южных городах, и Лечче не исключение. Я люблю чувствовать, как замедляется в таких местах течение времени – кажется, что запаздывают даже времена года, не говоря уж о людях. На ланч уходит пара часов, а уж об ужине и подумать страшно! Куда спешить? Мы в Саленто…
I love little towns in South, where nobody is never in a hurry. Even the seasons of the year are always late, to say nothing of people! Two hours spent at lunch, three hours for dinner… No rush, we’re in Salento!
